Helpful Jenn

Helpful Jenn
At the interview Jenn wore a vibrant shirt. Her shirt was not the only vibrant feature, it was her face that showed excitement towards the interview when explaining how much she accomplished in high school. She was influenced by her school to become more involved and expand her horizons. She was very expressive and detailed with her educational journey that lead her to college. It is important to learn from Jenn based on her motivation to investigate the proper resources provided in college. With that mindset and awareness we will be successful throughout college and further on in life.
During high school Jenn became more involved in her school that she was able to figure out what she wanted to major in. The clubs she joined taught her how to be organized, participate, and lead amongst a crowd of students. She joined the California School Federation which required her to offer tutoring to students. She was only allowed to have A’s and B’s to stay in the club, therefore she did her best to maintain her grades. In junior year she joined the United Nations International Emergency Children’s Fundraiser, she was Junior Secretary and in twelfth grade she was Vice President. In the club, fundraisers were formed during the holidays to donate to other countries with necessities. At first she wanted to be a veterinarian but decided she wants to be teacher after her experience in volunteering for students and kids. Up to this day I have seen Jenn searching through her email on volunteer or job opportunities.
Her senior year was pressuring because for students it is important to carefully choose what college to attend since it determines their career path. Jenn went to a high school with many students which was a possible factor to why her counselor was not able to talk with her regarding college. Jenn shared that preparing for college was mostly seeking for help rather than being told about important deadlines or performing certain steps for college. When she went to her counselor to seek help on her FAFSA, it was shocking to hear that she was told “Go to CSULA, I do not know anything about your financial aid.” However, Jenn did not settle and give up, she went for help to the career center and to her friends. She demonstrated her eagerness in wanting to attend college.

As a first generation college student Jenn is determined to be successful in life. She feels sad because she is now in college where we are given more homework and have more expectations from our family. However, she knows that she has more freedom because we get to organize our class schedule. In college it is ok to change majors it is common for that to happen. Her dream is working with kids, be happy, and living well which is what everyone wants to accomplish and deserve if they work for it. Jenn plans to reach her goal by seeking help at the tutoring center, her peers, and professors. Her mindset is making her parents proud and herself as well. Also like all college students she “really wants to leave and start life already.” It is understandable since we already have been in school for 12 to 13 years. Since we are adults in college we want to start living like adults and be independent with our career.
